In order to explore the spatial distribution and potential source of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), 19 surface soil samples were collected around the Dongjiang River in August, 2013. The levels of 16 individual PFCs were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Results show that total concentrations of PFCs (∑PFCs) range from 2.15 to 5.49 μg/kg dry weight (dw). The ∑PFCs concentrations in soils from Dongguan section are significantly higher than those of Huizhou section around the Dongjiang River. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) whose concentration ranging from 0.65 to 1.28 μg/kg dw is the dominant PFC contaminant. Compared with other regions in China, the ∑PFCs concentrations in soils around the Dongjiang River are relatively high, which could be relative to industrial structure and economic activity. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) model was employed to quantitatively calculate the contribution of extracted sources. The manufacturing of electroplating antifoggants, food packing and perfluoroalky carboxylates, atmospheric deposition and electrochemical fluorination are the three main source categories for PFCs in soils around the Dongjiang River. Relevant research between PFCs concentrations and soil total organic carbon shows that PFCs are more easily distributed in the soil with higher organic matter content, which would be more significant with the increases of PFCs chains. |
